Kathie
Snow, a powerful advocate and parent, speaks clearly
about People First Language. In her article she talks about the
use of inaccurate descriptors for people and its
impact on society. Pay close attention to the matrix that compares the old ways of describing people with disabilities and new People First alternatives.
Now, let's take it a step further. The professional
use of descriptors such as "my transition client" or "my Down's
guy" to identify people with disabilities occurs every day. Does
it take that much longer to use the person's name? As a Support
Broker, you are one among many who provide services to people
with disabilities. To be successful, you must
be guided by your future employer's wants, dreams,
and desires. You are a member of the team that will make dreams
a reality by encouraging community members to develop "People
First" attitudes.
