Some Predictable Cautions Concerning the Overemphasis and Over-Reliance on Person Centered Planning

This reading is a valuable reminder to Support Brokers regarding the over-reliance upon a technique versus embracing the vision behind person-centered planning. Be sure to read this article closely in order to grasp that the author, Michael J. Kendrick, Ph.D., is not diminishing the use of person-centered planning. Support Brokers as professionals in the disability field will feel the pressure to pick a prearranged or preauthorized service off the shelf instead of creating a model "from scratch" as Dr. Kendrick describes.

David Pitonyak’s 7 Questions to Guide the Development of a Support Plan

Although Dr. Pitonyak specializes in difficult behaviors, his approach to asking questions and determining what behavior may be telling us can help Support Brokers begin to understand how to help plan for individuals with complex behaviors in their history. Each question is linked to the answer, and the answers are almost always come back to asking you to consider if the individual that is receiving the planning is fully included and supported. If the answer is no, Dr. Pitonyak's clear question and answer format can assist you in thinking about how to address the universal need to be included and valued.

David Pitonyak's Support Plan Forms of a Support Plan

Dr. Pitonyak includes on his website a number of forms that may be of assistance to you as you are determining what kind of documentation will best suit the planning process for your individual employer. Pages 13-26 offer particular guidance for Brokers who are planning for individuals with complex or concerning behaviors – especially when there is facility-based staff with concerns. These forms are just one example of how you can facilitate information gathering and documentation of your interviewing process.

Dr. Beth Mount's 10 Profiles in Courage

This reading is a 12-page collection of biographies of people with disabilities whose lives were better fulfilled with the approach of placing them at the center of decision-making. Support Brokers may find these biographies inspiring so that they may seek out individuals with disabilities who are as creative and ready for change as those included in this reading.
