Case Study Three
Michael is a twenty-four year old man with whom you have been working for a while. It has been a challenge to find transportation providers and attendant care for Michael because he likes to stay out late, usually well past midnight. Providers who are available past 11:00pm are hard to find in your small town. You have gotten into the habit of scoping out possible providers wherever you are (i.e. while you are shopping for groceries, at the library, and the local diner). While shopping recently, Peter, one of the employees at the store, said he was looking for a second part-time job and indicated he already knew Michael. You thought you would chat with him about the potential job with Michael while he bagged your groceries. You both were laughing about how Michael likes to flirt with girls at the club when you turned around to find Michael's father glaring at you. He now feels you gossip about Michael to "anyone you run into." What do you do now?

link Identify different ways you could have had the conversation

with Peter without doing so in such a public place.

link Although Michael is a legal adult and has not voiced a problem

with your style of provider recruitment, have you clearly

discussed and documented permission to talk to others on his

   behalf?

link Reflect on how this incident could influence your relationship

   with Michael's Circle of Support?

Confidentiality is dependent on trust. As a Support Broker, you will be asked to repeatedly communicate or obtain information about your employer. Your ability to do this in a way that respectfully honors his or her needs and desires will help define how successful you will be. Reliance on the key points of PERMISSION, PURPOSE and MAINTENANCE will assist you on your path.
